Water Meter Reader
Performs routine clerical work in the reading of water meters; semi-skilled work in the maintenance of the City’s water distribution and wastewater collection system.
Under supervision of the Utility Office Manager, Finance Director, and Water Services Director, or as directed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Read and record water meter consumption and enter data into route books or hand-held computers.
- Walk or drive vehicles along established routes to take reading of meter dials.
- Upload into office computers all information collected on hand-held computers during meter rounds, or return route books or hand-held computers to Utility Office so that data can be complied.
- Verify readings in cases where consumption appears to be abnormal, and record possible reasons for fluctuations.
- Inspect meters for unauthorized connections, defects, and damage such as broken seals.
- Report to Utility Office any problems such as meter irregularities, damaged equipment, or impediments to meter access, including—but not limited to fences or dogs.
- Distribute Red Tags or Door Hangers to service addresses
- Answer customers’ questions about services and charges, or direct them to customer service representatives.
- Update client address and meter location information.
- Leave messages to arrange different times to read meters in cases in which meters are not accessible.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Six (6) months to one (1) year of related experience.

- Operating Vehicles, Mechanized Devices, or Equipment- Running, maneuvering, navigating, or driving vehicles or mechanized equipment.
- Performing General Physical Activities- Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

- Communicating with Persons Outside Organization- Communicating with people outside the organization, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources. This information can be exchanged in person, in writing, or by telephone or e-mail.

- Resolving Conflicts and Negotiating with Others- Handling complaints, settling disputes, and resolving grievances and conflicts.
- Evaluating Information to Determine Compliance with Standards- Using relevant information and individual judgement to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, codes, regulations or standards.
- Analyzing Data or Information- Identifying the underlying principles, reasons, or facts of information by breaking down information or data into separate parts.
- Handling and Moving Objects- Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.
- Judging the Qualities of Things, Services, or People- Assessing the value, importance, or quality of things, services, or people.
- Interacting with computers- Using computers and computer systems (including hardware and software) to program, write software, set up functions, enter data, or process information.
- Making Decisions and Solving Problems- Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
- Valid New Mexico Driver’s License.
- Must successfully pass the pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
- Certified in First Aid and CPR or be able to obtain it within the 1st year.
EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND MATERIALS:
Utilizes any equipment, tools and materials necessary to accomplish the duties described in the Essential Duties section above, including but not limited to:
- Equipment and tools typically used: Division vehicles, Data cap H (hand held reading unit), portable or mobile radio, wide variety of forms and office supplies, various hand tools, and when needed, appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Materials and products handled: All materials dealing with the construction and maintenance of water distribution lines or equipment; all chemicals dealing with the maintenance of Division vehicles and the general housekeeping of Division buildings and grounds; including aerosol insecticides.
- All chemicals associated therewith.
- All essential duties are performed outdoors with exposure to natural weather conditions with extremes in temperatures.
- Works closely with other employees.
- Exposure to various fumes, odors, mists, or dusts.
- Exposure to moderate noise levels.
- Job hazards or potential job hazards including cuts, bruises, animal or insect bites or stings, sprains, strains, broken bones, exposure to electrical shock, and operation of Division vehicles or equipment, falling objects.
- Duties involve walking or standing for long periods of time on even, uneven, hard, soft, wet, or dry surfaces.
- Duties may involve lifting of objects up to 100 pounds.
- Essential duties are normally performed during weekdays, although emergencies may require working all hours of the day or night, including weekends and holidays.
