Performs routine clerical work in the reading of water meters; semi-skilled work in the maintenance of the City’s the City’s water and electric meters and operations.
Under supervision of the Utility Office Manager, Finance Director, and Meter Supervisor, or as directed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Read and record water meter consumption and enter data into route books or hand-held computers.
- Walk or drive vehicles along established routes to take reading of meter dials.
- Upload into office computers all information collected on hand-held computers during meter rounds, or return route books or hand-held computers to Utility Office so that data can be compiled.
- Verify readings in cases where consumption appears to be abnormal, and record possible reasons for fluctuations.
- Inspect meters for unauthorized connections, defects, and damage, such as broken seals.
- Report to Utility Office any problems such as: meter irregularities, damaged equipment, or impediments to meter access, including—but not limited to—fences or dogs.
- Distribute Red Tags or Door Hangers to service addresses.
- Answer customers’ questions about services and charges, or direct them to customer service representatives.
- Update client address and meter location information.
- Leave messages to arrange different times to read meters for cases in which meters are not accessible.
- Remove and replace meters as needed to ensure proper recording of usage.
- Remove and replace meter cans (water) when appropriate.
- Installing and removing hydrant meters.
- Tests and calibrates 5/8 inch - 6 inch water meters which tests for accuracy.
- Perform physical inventory of meter parts (water and electric)
- Order meters, meter parts, gaskets, meter tools and supplies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge skills, and abilities would be:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Six (6) months to one (1) year of related experience.

- Operating Tools and Equipment-Skill in operating listed tools and equipment.
- Communication-Ability to follow oral and written instructions, communication in both oral and written English and must possess good hearing and sight (aided or unaided).
- Valid New Mexico Driver’s License.
- Must successfully pass the pre-employment drug and alcohol testing.
- Certified in First Aid and CPR or be able to obtain it within the first (1st) year.
- Might be required to attend the City Commission Meetings when necessary; and will be required to attend limited Public Utility Advisory Board meetings.
- Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties such as running errands, picking up supplies as needed.
EQUIPMENT, TOOLS AND MATERIALS:
Utilizes any equipment, tools and materials necessary to accomplish the duties described in the Essential Duties section above, including but not limited to:
- Equipment and tools typically used: Division vehicles, Data cap H (hand held reading unit), portable or mobile radio, wide variety of forms and office supplies, various hand tools, and when needed, appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Materials and products handled: All materials dealing with the construction and maintenance of water distribution lines or equipment; all chemicals dealing with the maintenance of Division vehicles and the general housekeeping of Division buildings and grounds; including aerosol insecticides.
- All essential duties are performed outdoors with exposure to natural weather conditions with extremes in temperatures.
- Works closely with other employees.
- Exposure to various fumes, odors, mists, and/or dusts.
- Exposure to moderate noise levels.
- Job hazards or potential job hazards including cuts, bruises, animal or insect bites or stings, sprains, strains, broken bones, exposure to electrical shock, and operation of Division vehicles or equipment, falling objects.
- Duties involve walking or standing for long periods of time on even, uneven, hard, soft, wet, or dry surfaces.
- Duties may involve lifting of objects up to 100 pounds.
- Essential duties are normally performed during weekdays, although emergencies may require working all hours of the day or night, including weekends and holidays.
