"The Wall That Heals"
Flag display with the branches of the Armed Forces of the United States of
America In 2003, the small community of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, through diligence, sacrifice and patriotism, obtained the original Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, also known as The Wall That Heals, from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund in Washington, D.C.
An Aerial Shot of the first few phases of construction Fueled by the philanthropic spirit of generous individuals, the acquisition of The Wall has been a great accomplishment for the City of Truth or Consequences and the entire state of New Mexico. On Veterans Day 2003, this endeavor culminated in the ceremonial "Raising of the Wall" over the newly built memorial park at 996 South Broadway (next door to the New Mexico Veterans Center.) Future phases of the project include a learning center, museum, history trail and additional tributes to veterans.
Column Burial Site In 2004, we dedicated ourselves to the beginning of the newest portion of the Park, called "the Walk of Education." When it is complete, it will be a 5-point star with a monument for each war and conflict, from the Revolutionary War through Iraq. Our goal for the dedication this year is to have the star itself complete, along with the WWI monument.
Veterans Memorial Park (505) 740-7111 or (505) 894-6673 Veterans Memorial Park and Museum The Veterans Memorial Park and Museum has at this time completed nine phases. The Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall has been purchased and been made permanent along with permanent flags making a tribute to each branch of the United States Armed Forces. A small information building has been erected. There has been a walkway poured forming a "star" and along the way there are sixteen marble monuments paying tribute to each armed conflict that the United States has been involved in. This is called "The Walk of Education." At the far end of the property a permanent shelter and a column burial site overlooking the Rio Grande River. We are still trying to obtain equipment tributes to the armed conflicts as well as build and furnish a museum. We hope this will be an educational/teaching museum. We also plan much more landscaping for the park so that we will not only furnish an educational tool but also a calming, quiet and attractive area where visitors may find peace. |
